Detergent &* Beetroot cells investigation

Asked by Calina | Mar 19, 2007 | AS Level > Biology > Coursework
Calina asks:

We have to write up the plan for the above experiement. Our tutor has said we will be provided with 2.5 dgm3 solution of lauryl sulphate and a beetroot. I thought that we would have different solution strengths and if we have to cut the beetroot won't that affect the results as we will already have damaged the membranes? Your help in this matter would be greatly appreciated

etutor answers:
You can make different solutions from the one you have been given by diluting it. Cutting will damage the membranes of some cells (but a minority) and it would be best to rinse the cut beetroot before starting the experiment.
